Santorum promises to seek help for = research

Thousands of = people have=20 fought for their lives at the Regional Cancer Center.

One = of those=20 people was John Kanzius.

Kanzius has now moved his fight = just west=20 of the treatment center, 2500 W. 12th St., to Industrial Sales = &=20 Manufacturing Inc., 2609 W. 12th St.

That's where two = machines used=20 in an experimental cancer treatment have been manufactured. The = machines=20 create radio waves that are directed into test subjects. The radio = waves=20 act on cancer cells that are enhanced with minerals and leave = healthy=20 cells alone. Kanzius came up with the concept for the cancer = treatment.=20

Kanzius outlined the progress of the noninvasive radio = frequency=20 cancer ablation therapy to U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum on=20 Monday.

Santorum, R-Pa., met privately with Kanzius at = Industrial=20 Sales late Monday afternoon.

The machines manufactured at = the Erie=20 plant are being used in experiments with live animals in hospitals = in=20 Pittsburgh and Houston, and Kanzius is hopeful testing can begin = on people=20 in 18 months.

Santorum helped secure $200,000 in federal = funding in=20 2005 for research and funding of the machine built at Industrial=20 Sales.

Kanzius is hoping Santorum can help obtain more = federal=20 money to help with the costs associated with testing the therapy. = Kanzius=20 said it would take $2 million to $3 million to begin testing the = therapy=20 on humans.

After their meeting, Santorum promised to work = to=20 obtain more federal dollars and said he plans to ask senators in = Texas to=20 help him with that goal.

"This is great for the future of = fighting=20 cancer and great for the economy here at the same time,"Santorum = said. "I=20 want to make sure resources are available for testing to continue=20 full-scale."

Santorum was shown pictures of the machines = developed=20 at Industrial Sales, which employs 125 people in an = 84,000-square-foot=20 building. The company is capable of making the machines en masse, = company=20 President James Rutkowski Sr. assured Santorum on = Monday.

The first=20 two machines are crude but effective, Kanzius said. He said they = are big=20 enough to use on people.

"At this point in testing, the = cosmetics=20 don't make the work any better," Kanzius said.

Santorum = said he=20 was excited about the possibilities of helping with funding a = possible=20 cure for cancer and helping Erie's struggling economy at the same=20 time.

"The reason for this meeting today is to find a way = to=20 develop (the cancer treatment theory) quickly and do it here in = Erie,"=20 Santorum said.

Santorum is facing a tough battle to retain = his=20 Senate seat in November. Current state Treasurer Robert Casey Jr., = a=20 Democrat, is challenging him.

Santorum spent the day in the = region=20 Monday. Along with visiting Erie, he stopped in Clarion County to=20 participate in the groundbreaking for the Clarion County Airport = runway=20 extension project and in Oil City, where he received an award from = the=20 Northwest Pennsylvania Regional Planning and Development=20 Commission.
